There are so many stages with the developing flower bud. The last leaf bud left standing at the tip of a stem as winter sets in, uses the winter months to develop into the flower bud.
Depending on the type of winter and spring, there seem to be no end of layers of furry bracts that the terminal bud can put on and dispose of as the bud becomes larger.
If you are wondering how I painted the furry bracts, I did this carefully with layers of transparent paint and a round brush that was flattened. Essentially, I paint in between the hairs.
