In the south of England there is a lot of areas of sandy soil and this is exactly where Gorse thrives. There are many species of Ulex so that in fact there is one that is flowering nearly the whole year round.
Gorse is very spiny, so it is easy to get stabbed whilst picking and painting it. But it is worth it to see those pea-like flowers materialise on the vellum.
