‘Far from common time’ – Thymus vulgaris

'Far from common time' - Thymus vulgaris. In watercolour and graphite

I was asked to paint this picture for a book.

Thyme, how on earth does one portray such a tiny plant? Its all green and little more – other than of course the smell!

I started studying the plant and became quite entranced by it. Yes, everything is tiny, except for the smell and the extra something it gives to cooking.

I found out why it smells so good and how the plant managed to develop the aromatic oils we have found so useful. This helped me to look at the plant, see it and discover it for what it is. I love it.

Our garden in Norway is mostly rock with fissures. We now have some of the fissures filled with Thyme, creating beautiful carpets of green, with pink flowers in the summer.
