Many see the Stinking iris where they live, some appreciate it as a beautiful plant, whereas others look at it as a weed.
This picture started out by accident. I liked the the flower and sat down in a comfortable spot to measure, draw and colour match it in my sketch book. At another time I was attracted by the way the ripening fruit had a tendency to weigh the branch down. Then one winter day I looked out of the window and saw the bright red of the berries against the crackly-looking case. I drew that. About a year later I wanted a subject for a picture and realised I had all the necessary ingredients in my sketchbook for painting the Stinking Iris. The only addition needed was a bit of rhizome which I dug up up.
It’s a tough plant and continued to thrive even with a bit of its root missing.
