Rhododendron impeditum

Rhododendron impeditum. Watercolour and graphite on hot pressed paper.

This is the tiniest Rhododendron I have ever seen. I like ‘tiny’ especially if I am able to paint it in a way that encourages others to look more at a plant and appreciate it.

The plant is very compact as you can see by the habit drawing in graphite. Before the flowers open the buds a tiny pale brown structures, almost the same colour as the spots in the leaves. You might not look twice at the plant in this stage – But I did.

I decided that the only way to paint it was to highlight a group of flowers at the end of a branch and increase their size. Now you can see the typical beauty of a Rhododendron in flower. I did the same for some buds, showing them at different stages of development and opening, plus an anther showing where the pollen emerges.

The habit shows mostly the closed bud at the apex of the stems, except for one open flower group in colour. Imagine the canopy being covered with flowers in various stages of opening – exquisite.
