Tulip tree – Liriodendron tulipifera

Tulip tree in colour pencil on hot pressed paper

I first saw this tree in flower at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, but this picture is painted from a tree on Bosham Hoe on the south coast of England. The owner very kindly gave me a piece to draw from.

The flowers are very subdued in the tree and you almost need to know what you are looking for to see them. But you can tell what tree you are looking at because of the very special leaves – they are four-lobed, almost cut flat across the top of them.

The tulip tree is in itself quite fascinating and I enjoyed researching it before I painted it. Liriodendron is the only genus in the ‘other’ branch of the Magnoliaceae family. The Magnolia Genus is the branch many know more about.

Unlike the Magnolia, the Liriodendron is bee pollinated.
