Mistletoe – Viscum album

Mistletoe in colour pencil on hot pressed paper

It was nearing Christmas when I painted this picture. Many students want to paint a plant that reminds them of this time of year; shiny Holly, veiny Ivy or delicate Mistletoe for exchanging kisses.

Where I lived on the south coast of England, there was plenty of Mistletoe very high up in the trees as it was often removed lower down. I managed to get some from someone who collected it from their woods in the Chidham area. I thoroughly enjoyed painting this sprig in preparation for my workshop.

On arrival in eastern Norway, we noticed that Mistletoe could be seen everywhere. Apparently, in the Horten area, Mistletoe is protected, as is the tree which is playing host. A real problem is experienced here as eventually the Mistletoe can spread so much it kills its host.
