As with several of my small paintings the picture started as a demonstration for a workshop on Hellebores. I had lots of different Hellebores in my garden therefore for a change chose to paint them face up in a bowl of water. Normally the flower hangs its head and you have little opportunity to see the delicate stamens or fertilised carpels under the cap.
