English Bluebell bowing to the left

English Bluebell bowing to the left - Watercolour on natural calf-skin vellum.

The woods in an English countryside early in the spring can be covered with a blue carpet. This is generally the English Bluebell . There are two species found in England, one is the native Hyacinthoides non-scripta – English Bluebell where the flowers remain hanging, creating this intense blue when seen as a large carpet. The other is the naturalised H. Hispanic – the Spanish bluebell. The flowers on this species tip up so that seen en-masse, are much paler. Unfortunately they seem to take over from the native species.
