Antonia Rose

Antonia Rose in colour pencil on hot pressed paper

There is a long history to this painting. A friend asked me to help her paint her own version of this plant. The rose had been developed by her father who was a nurseryman, and named it after his first grandchild, my friends daughter.

The plant was becoming weaker each year and this particular year she had only two flowers from which to immortalise it.

We were in the middle of a very hot period so that not only was she attempting to paint the rose, she also needed to keep it alive and fresh looking. Quite a challenge.

Each evening, the rose was ‘drowned’ in a bucket of cold water and left outside for the night. Each morning it was revived and seemed just as fresh until the day the picture was completed. This is my version of the same plant done at the same time.
